What is a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases breast volume and improves symmetry. This procedure can improve volume in a couple of different ways, including:

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases breast volume and improves symmetry. This procedure can improve volume in a couple of different ways, including:
About 90% of women choose silicone gel implants, which have a silicone outer shell and a silicone gel filling. Saline implants, which have a silicone shell that’s filled with saline during the surgery, are the other implant option. Both are safe, FDA-approved options that can give you great results.
Fat transfer uses fat harvested from another part of your body, like the thighs or abdomen, to increase breast volume. It’s normal to have some fat resorption after a fat transfer, so the results aren’t as dramatic as with implants. For this reason, fat transfer is best suited for women who want a subtle increase in size.
If any of these options sound interesting, the next step is scheduling an appointment to determine whether you’re a good candidate for breast augmentation.
The Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island team evaluates your situation and then makes individualized recommendations. In general, you could be a good candidate if you’re unhappy with the appearance of your breasts and would like them to be larger.
Many women who choose breast augmentation have never liked their breast size. But others lost significant breast volume after weight loss or childbirth and simply want to restore their breasts to their previous appearance.
Ideal candidates are women who are at or close to their ideal weight. You must be at least 18 years old to have breast augmentation, and only women aged 22 and up can choose silicone gel implants. This is because the FDA has only approved silicone implants for this age range and up. 2
One of the most significant advantages is improved body proportions, as increasing breast volume can create a better balance between the chest, waist, and hips. Many patients also appreciate improved symmetry when one breast is noticeably smaller or differently shaped than the other. Clothing often fits more comfortably and attractively after surgery, especially bras, swimwear, and fitted tops.
Beyond physical changes, breast augmentation is known for its positive impact on self-confidence. Many women report feeling more comfortable in their bodies and more confident in social or intimate settings. For patients who have experienced volume loss due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging, breast augmentation can restore a youthful, fuller appearance that feels more in line with their pre-pregnancy or pre-weight-loss body.
The Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island team uses state-of-the-art techniques, including a no-touch technique in which the implants are placed directly from an antibiotic solution into an implant funnel and into your breast pocket.
The no-touch technique requires no skin contact and may reduce the risk of infection. Additionally, the no-touch technique may help to reduce the risk of capsular contracture, in which scar tissue hardens and contracts around the implant.
The Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island team uses minimally invasive techniques, resulting in minimal scarring. Their goal is long-lasting implants with beautiful results.
Patients appreciate breast augmentations because they are highly customizable. To explore these options, you will first need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Papafragkou and Dr. Rhee on Long Island. He will take the time to understand your aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations, and will also review your medical history. This conversation is essential for determining whether breast augmentation is the right option for you and which technique will best achieve your desired outcome.
Your consultation will also include a physical examination of your breasts and chest wall anatomy. Factors such as skin elasticity, existing breast tissue, body proportions, and lifestyle are all considered when creating a personalized surgical plan. You are encouraged to ask questions, review before-and-after photos, and discuss implant types and sizes in detail. This appointment is designed to be educational, collaborative, and pressure-free so that you can make a confident, informed decision.
Selecting implants is a highly personalized process that involves several important decisions. Rather than focusing solely on cup size, we will guide you through choices that affect how your results look, feel, and age over time. These decisions are made collaboratively, guided by your body proportions, lifestyle, and aesthetic preferences.
Patients can choose between silicone gel and saline implants, both FDA-approved and widely used. Silicone gel implants are the most popular option, as they tend to feel softer and more closely resemble natural breast tissue. Many women prefer silicone implants for their realistic look and feel, especially if they have less existing breast tissue. Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater after placement, which allows for smaller incisions and adjustable volume during surgery.
Implant size is selected based on much more than a desired cup size. We will evaluate your height, weight, chest width, shoulder proportions, and existing breast tissue to determine the size that looks balanced and natural on your body. Choosing an implant that is too large for your frame can increase the risk of discomfort, stretching, or long-term complications.
During your consultation, you may try on implant sizers or view simulated outcomes to help visualize different sizes. The goal is to achieve the look you want while maintaining comfort, proportion, and long-term satisfaction.
Implants are available in round and anatomical (teardrop) shapes. Round implants are the most commonly used and provide fullness in both the upper and lower portions of the breast, which many patients find aesthetically appealing. They also maintain shape regardless of movement or position. Anatomical implants are designed to mimic the natural slope of the breast, with more volume at the bottom.
Implants can be placed either above or below the chest muscle. Submuscular (under the muscle) placement is commonly recommended, as it can create a more natural contour and may reduce the risk of visible implant edges or capsular contracture. This approach is particularly beneficial for women with less existing breast tissue. Subglandular (above the muscle) placement may be appropriate for select patients with sufficient breast tissue and a preference for a shorter recovery time.
Incisions are carefully placed to minimize visible scarring while allowing precise implant placement. Common incision sites include the breast crease (inframammary), the lower edge of the areola, or the armpit. The inframammary incision is the most frequently used because it provides excellent access and typically heals with a well-hidden scar.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Once you are asleep, we will create the incisions, prepare the implant pocket using advanced techniques, and carefully place the implants using the no-touch method.
After surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery area before being discharged home the same day with detailed post-operative instructions. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
