What are fillers?

Fillers are injectables that temporarily increase facial volume. It’s normal to steadily lose collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid — the natural proteins that keep skin firm and supple — as you age. 

This ultimately causes wrinkles, facial folds, and overall volume loss, particularly in the middle and lower parts of the face. Fillers can plump up the wrinkles and folds and improve volume in specific areas. 

What types of fillers are available?

Plastic Surgery Associates of Long Island offers two categories of fillers: 

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a copy of the substance that occurs naturally in your body. Additionally, Juvéderm fillers contain an anesthetic to make treatment more comfortable. 

The most popular areas for Juvéderm treatment are the nasolabial folds, the laugh lines that start at the corners of your nose and go down to your mouth area. Juvéderm can fill in nasolabial folds for a natural looking result. 

There are five different Juvéderm products, each with specific applications in specific parts of the face. So, Juvéderm can help with other problems like midface volume loss and thin lips. The products have instant results, and there’s no downtime after treatment. 

Sculptra®

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that stimulates new collagen production over time. Essentially, Sculptra helps your body to make its own natural fillers over a few months. 

Sculptra is FDA-approved for use in nasolabial folds. Most people need three or more treatment sessions, spaced out over several months, for optimal volume building. As with Juvéderm, there’s no downtime after Sculptra treatment.

How long do fillers last?

Each filler has a different lifespan based on the specific formula, the treatment area, and your personal body chemistry. 

In general, Juvéderm products last 9-24 months. They last the longest time in the midface (the cheeks) and the shortest time in the lips because the lips are so mobile. Sculptra lasts for up to two years in the nasolabial folds.
